Change of location for proposed Crabbie distillery
Halewood Wines & Spirits has altered the planned location of its John Crabbie & Co microdistillery in Edinburgh.
Halewood Wines & Spirits will invest more than £7 million in the new distillery in Leith
A planning application for the site was submitted in August last year, identifying Forth Industrial Estate in Granton as the proposed location.
However, Halewood has now announced that the distillery will be constructed at a site on Graham Street, Leith, near the original home of John Crabbie & Co.
Halewood will invest more than £7 million (US$9.3m) in the new distillery, which is aiming to become the first single malt distillery to open in the city for 100 years, bringing “significant investment and employment to the area”.
Last month, Holyrood Distillery secured funds of £5.8m (US$8.3m) to open a single malt distillery in Edinburgh’s Engine Shed building.
David Brown, managing director of John Crabbie & Co, said: “We are delighted to announce our plans to invest in the creation of a new distillery in Leith.
“The site we have chosen in Leith has historical links with Scotch whisky production and maturation dating back over 200 years and we hope it will contribute to the rising prosperity of the area with the creation of new jobs and through attracting additional visitors to the city.
“With the growing popularity of Scotch whisky around the world the time is right to rediscover the Crabbie whisky brand and to put Edinburgh firmly back on the Scotch whisky map. ”
In January, Halewood International announced the return of the John Crabbie & Co whisky brand after a 40-year hiatus, with the launch of two limited-edition single malts under the brand.
