Waitrose doubles ‘local’ gin offering

UK supermarket chain Waitrose has more than doubled its range of local and ‘craft’ gin brands since the start of 2018.

Waitrose has added 12 ‘craft’ gin brands to its range since the start of 2018

The supermarket has strived to keep up with soaring demand for artisan spirits with the launch of 12 locally produced gin brands since the start of this year.

David Goddard, local and regional assistant buyer at Waitrose, said: “The rise of craft gin certainly shows no sign of slowing – it’s the most popular spirit we sell.

“Over the past year we’ve been working closely with small, local distilleries across the country to bring more artisan gin to our shelves.

“It’s always great to work with smaller suppliers who might be just starting out or who have very local roots to some of our shops.”

Earlier this year, Waitrose launched Liverpool Gin and City of London Dry Gin in its stores, and has today announced that Nelson’s Rhubarb and Custard gin and Manchester’s Three Rivers Gin will be launching exclusively with the supermarket chain.

The supermarket’s expanded local gin range means that half of Waitrose shops will now offer a locally-sourced gin that has been distilled within 30 miles of the store.
