Gordon & MacPhail bottles ‘final’ 1950s Linkwood cask
Gordon & MacPhail has launched a 1956 Linkwood single malt Scotch whisky – thought to be the last 1950s cask from the distillery and priced at £22,000 (US$30,850).

The Private Collection from Linkwood Distillery 1956 by Gordon & MacPhail is thought to be the one of the oldest Linkwood single malt whiskies ever, bottled at 60 years old.
The latest offering in Gordon & MacPhail’s Private Collection range, cask 20, is also believed to be the final remaining 1950s cask globally.
Only 53 decanters of the 60-year-old single malt whisky have been released for sale worldwide, aged in first-fill Sherry hogshead casks and bottled at 49.4% abv.
Filled at the Linkwood Distillery on 3 January 1956, Cask 20 is one of the last casks laid down by John Urquhart, first generation member of the family that founded Gordon & MacPhail, before he retired the following month.
The expression is described as an “intricately layered” whisky with “rich, warm aromas” and highlights of “blueberry, fruit cake, and dark chocolate”.
Stephen Rankin, director of prestige and fourth generation member of the Urquhart family, said: “This incredible whisky is the culmination of the unrivalled knowledge and skills passed down and strengthened, over the decades, through four generations of my family.
“It is the deep understanding of the relationship between the oak and the spirit that has allowed Gordon & MacPhail to nurture this cask for six decades while retaining the unique distillery character.”
The packaging takes inspiration from the landscape surrounding the Linkwood Distillery, with contours etched into the gold base and stopper of each decanter. All 53 decanters are hand-blown and individually numbered, and come with a certificate of authenticity signed by Rankin.
The whisky is accompanied by a commemorative book written by whisky author Jonny McCormick.
A number of decanters are available for purchase from the company’s South Street retail shop in Elgin, Scotland, at an RRP of £22,000.
