Trade union criticises UK govt food and drink council

Trade union GMB is “demanding” that workers are represented in the UK Government’s new Food and Drink Sector Council, which “risks becoming an exclusive talking shop for big business”.

The Food and Drink Sector Council, described as a “partnership between the government and the whole food chain”, was formed at the end of last year. It aims to address the “challenges and opportunities” resulting from Brexit.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) welcomed the council and its planned creation of ‘sector deals’, which will aim to boost UK exports.

The council met for the first time at the end of January, but GMB said “not a single voice from the workers in the food and drink industry was included”.

It is now calling on the council to ensure it involves trade unions and workers in its future discussions.

“Without a true voice for the workers on the Food and Drink Sector Council, it seriously risks becoming an exclusive talking shop for big business,” said Eamon O’Hearn, GMB national officer.

“This £28 billion industry relies on thousands of people, including our members, who work every day to not only put food on the table of their family but of families across the country and the world, making some of the most famous British exports from Marmite to mustard and whisky to Walkers Crisps.

“Our members deserve more than crumbs off the table from the bosses of the big food and drink businesses.”
