One-off Malt Mill miniature to go under the hammer

Online whisky auction site Scotch Whisky Auctions is hosting the sale of a one-of-a-kind miniature of Malt Mill, which has a reserve price of £1,500 (US$2,135).

The Malt Mill miniature was distilled in 1959, three years before the distillery closed

The whisky, distilled in 1959 has been described as “the unicorn of drams” and is thought to be the only bottle of aged whisky from the distillery, which closed down in 1962.

Built in 1908 on the same site as the Lagavulin distillery on Islay, spirit from the famed distillery was thought to have been used up in blended whiskies and was never released as a single malt.

Production at the distillery ceased in 1962 and, until now, the only spirit thought to exist was a bottle of new make spirit on display at the Lagavulin distillery.

The 50ml bottling, from James MacArthur’s, is thought to be the only bottle of Malt Mill in existence, and, as a result, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the auction of this 10-year-old dram.

A representative from Scotch Whisky Auctions told The Spirits Business that the whisky was “a slippery eel, and exciting because of the mystery which surrounds it. The auction and bidders will set the pace on this one”.

The Malt Mill distillery has been steeped in folklore since it closed and an imaginary final cask of whisky from the Islay distillery took a leading role in Ken Loach’s 2012 film, The Angels’ Share.
