Dalmore Eos 59yo hits US$117k at auction

Auction house Bonhams is celebrating after a successful Hong Kong whisky sale, which saw a bottle of The Dalmore Eos 59-year-old fetch HK$918,750 (US$117,480).

The Dalmore Eos 59-year-old expression reached HK$918,750 at auction in Hong Kong

During the whisky sale on Friday 2 February, each of the top lots reached as much as three times their estimates.

As part of the Bonhams Hong Kong auction, two bottles from The Dalmore Legendary Release went under the hammer.

The Dalmore Eos 59-year-old reached the auction’s highest price, selling for HK$918,750 (US$117,480).

One of just 20 bottles in existence, Eos combines spirit from two ex-Sherry casks married together to create a “truly brilliant” expression.

Also appearing in the Hong Kong auction, The Dalmore Selene 58-year-old was one of just 30 bottles released.

The whisky from the Highland distillery eventually sold for HK$673,750 (US$86,150), tripling its HK$200,000 (US$25,570) estimate.

Named after the goddess of the moon, this bottling brings together spirit from two ex-Sherry casks, both of which have aged since 1951.

The sale also included a number of expressions from Scotland’s The Macallan distillery and the closed Karuizawa distillery in Japan.

The Macallan Millennium Decanter doubled its HK$200,000 (US$25,570) estimate, reaching HK$428,750 (US$54,820), while a 1964 expression from Karuizawa sold for HK$306,250 (US$39,160).

During the sale, the auction house also previewed two 60-year-old bottlings from The Macallan, due to go under the hammer in May.

The two 1926 bottlings feature artwork from Sir Peter Blake and Valerio Adami and have remained out of the public eye since their last auctions more than 30 years ago.

Bonhams head of fine wine and whisky in Hong Kong, Daniel Lam, said: “These bottles are incredibly rare and whiskies of this caliber stand in themselves as works of art inside out.”

Last year, the auction house recorded its “most successful year ever” for whisky, with total sales reaching £919,000 (US$1.2m).
