Berry Bros relaunches Berrys’ Best GinBy Nicola Carruthers
Wine and spirits merchant Berry Bros & Rudd has reintroduced its own-label London Dry gin with an updated recipe after a four-year hiatus.
Originally created in 1909, Berry Bros & Rudd London Dry Gin is produced using liquid from the merchant’s oldest remaining bottle from the 1950s.
The gin was originally named Berrys’ Best Gin before its discontinuation in 2014.
Distilled and bottled at London-based Thames Distillers, the gin contains juniper berries, coriander seeds and angelica root.
Bottled at 46% abv, the gin is available in the UK from today (20 February) for an RRP of £25.00 through its in-house UK distribution arm, Fields Morris & Verdin.
The expression is described as having hints of “violet creams and a soft chalkiness” on the nose, while the palate is “appealingly soft with a floral slant”.
“We are seeing a real gin revival and we hope that people will enjoy the heritage and history around the Berry Bros & Rudd London Dry Gin,” said Berry Bros & Rudd chairman Lizzy Rudd.
“It’s a complex, well balanced gin with a wonderful combination of botanicals and flavours such as the not oft seen winter savoury, which creates an exceptional gin and tonic.”
Charles Maxwell, director at Thames Distillers, added: “It was a fascinating challenge to build a recipe with just a small sample of the 1950’s gin as a reference. We are very pleased to have made a product which has been passed as being up to Berrys’ renowned high standards and a match to the historic gin.”
