Charities benefit from Scotch Whisky Action Fund

The Scotch Whisky Action Fund has awarded donations to 15 charities working to tackle alcohol misuse in Scotland and is now accepting applications for the next round of funding.

Scotch Whisky Action Fund was set up to help tackle alcohol misuse across Scotland

This is the fourth round of awards since the fund was established by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) in December 2013. A total of 37 awards have been given out since the fund started.

Additional funds were made available this year thanks to independent charity Foundation Scotland.

Giles Ruck, Foundation Scotland chief executive, said: “This year Foundation Scotland took the decision to contribute additional money from our own funds to ensure even more projects could benefit.

“This is a significant step to help individuals and communities tackle misuse across Scotland.”

The fund is designed to provide monetary support to schemes that offer targeted interventions to tackle alcohol-related harm in three key areas: young people below the age of 18, families, and communities.

An independent awards panel, chaired by Dame Joan Stringer, chose each initiative that received funding this year, all of which are located across Scotland, from Ayrshire to Elgin.

Projects that received a slice of the funding included Barnardo’s (£6,743), Couple Counselling Lothian (£18,000), Elgin Youth Development Group (£13,950), Motherwell Football Club Community Trust (£7,500), Reeltime Music (£8,186) and Impact Arts Project Ltd (£25,000).

Karen Betts, SWA chief executive, said: “We’re committed to tackling alcohol misuse and our action fund is an example of our work in this area.

“It’s particularly encouraging to see such a diverse range of projects being awarded this year, from those working with young people in schools to those working with carers.

“We’re delighted to support these initiatives working in their communities to prevent and reduce misuse and would encourage organisations to apply for the latest round of funding.”

Applications are already open for the next round of funding. More details can be found online at foundationscotland.org.uk.
