Diageo launches cocktail-making skill for Amazon’s Alexa

Diageo is hoping to inspire a new wave of at-home bartenders with the launch of its Amazon Alexa voice-activated cocktail-making skill.

The Bar works with the Amazon Echo Show to provide cocktail recipes and technique masterclasses

Diageo’s ‘The Bar’ skill has been launched in the UK to work with Amazon’s Alexa-powered Echo Show device and aims to help cocktail fans create drinks at home this Christmas.

The new skill is inspired by Diageo’s website thebar.com, which has been helping budding bartenders make cocktails at home since 2013.

Periklies Antoniou, new technology and media innovation manager at Diageo, said: “We’re excited to be using new technology to inspire consumers to shake things up this Christmas. Technology is changing the way we socialise in and outside of the home, and with the new ‘The Bar’ skill, we’re tapping into the growing number of adults using voice-enabled devices to take them on a journey towards mastering mixology.”

The skill enables the Echo Show device to provide cocktail recipes and guides, as well as cocktail suggestions based on the user’s preferences, and lessons on modern mixology techniques.

Users can also use the skill to create a shopping list of ingredients, which they can then order directly from Amazon.

The Alexa skill has been developed in collaboration with Amazon and global digital creative agency Isobar.

Daniël Sytsma, creative director at Isobar in Amsterdam, said: “When developing this new service we wanted to make the cocktail making process as seamless as possible. This starts with offering the inspiration and recipes to make great tasting and looking cocktails but also the delivery of tools and ingredients through a direct commerce relationship. Simply tell Alexa what you’re missing and everything can be delivered to your home.”

The Alexa skill from Diageo follows the release of a cocktail-making skill from Pernod Ricard for the smart speaker and voice assistant.
