Macallan 52yo tops Bonhams whisky sale

The Macallan was once again the headline sale at a Bonhams auction in Edinburgh, when a bottle of The Macallan Select Reserve 52-year-old sold for £15,625 (US$20k).

The 52-year-old expression had been estimated at between £7,000 and £9,000.

The auction made a total of £523,963, the highest ever for a Bonhams whisky sale in Edinburgh.

During the auction, The Macallan 1961 sold for £13,125. One of only 379 bottles, it had been estimated at between £8,000 and £10,000.

In addition, Glenfarclas 60-year-old, one of only 360 bottles made £12,500 after having an estimate of between £10,000 and £15,000.

A crystal bottle of Port Ellen 36-year-old 1981 bottled in 2017 sold for £9,375. Drawn from a single cask as part of Diageo’s Casks of Distinction programme, it was estimated at between £4,500-£5,000.

A full 30-year-old cask of The Macallan set a new world record for the most expensive whisky cask sold at auction yesterday after fetching HK$2,928,000 (US$375k) at a Spink auction in Hong Kong.
