Loch Lomond launches 50-year-old whisky

Independent distiller and blender Loch Lomond is set to release its “oldest and rarest” expression to date – a 50-year-old single malt, priced at £12,000 (about US$15,500).

Loch Lomond 50 Year Old has been matured since the early days of the distillery in 1967

Loch Lomond 50 Year Old has been maturing at the Loch Lomond Distillery in Alexandria, Dunbartonshire since 1967, first in American oak hogshead and then English oak hogshead.

Its “distinctive” nature, explained production director John Peterson, comes from the straight neck pot stills favoured by the distillery, which “were unique in 1966 when they were first installed, and are still unique to this day”.

Bottled at 46.2% abv, each bottling is encased in a hand-blown crystal decanter which is in turn presented inside The Tempest Chest, a bespoke chest made by Scotland’s Method Studio. The chest is hand-shaped in solid oak and lined with indigo-dyed leather.

Callum Robinson, creative director at Method Studio, said: “We drew great inspiration from Scotland’s most romantic, dramatic and historic loch. The Loch Lomond 50 Year Old is born out of a truly mystical place of wood, fire, water and metal and our aim was to harness this energetic, elemental group of ingredients to create something unique, and worthy of its heritage.

Loch Lomond Group CEO Colin Matthews, said: “With the launch of the 50 Year Old single malt, we are putting Loch Lomond firmly on the Scotch whisky map and we are proud to become one of a very select few distilleries in the world which have released a 50-year-old whisky.”

Loch Lomond 50 Year Old is described as having a “silky mouthfeel”, with tastes of “tropical fruit, fresh pineapple and ripe banana with a honey sweetness”. On the nose, it features clove, cinnamon, sultanas and vanilla fudge, with a finish of “ginger, bursts of gooseberry and elderflower, and waves of tangy grapefruit citrus”.

Loch Lomond 50 Year Old will be available to buy in the UK from The Whisky Shop, The Whisky Exchange, Royal Mile Whiskies and Master of Malt from December 2017. It will also be available in global markets, including Singapore, Taiwan, China, Japan and travel retail. Distribution will be limited to 60 decanters worldwide.

Last month, Loch Lomond introduced the Loch Lomond 10 Year Old to its travel retail line.
