Port Ellen annual releases tops Bonhams whisky auction

A complete set of Port Ellen annual releases from 2001-2016 could fetch up to £25,000 (US$33.8k) at Bonhams whisky auction in Edinburgh next month.

Port Ellen annual releases will lead the Bonhams whisky auction in Edinburgh next month

Held on Wednesday 4 October, the sale will feature 16 Port Ellen bottles, all in their original cartons.

The whiskies were distilled either in 1978 or 1979 and released in limited numbers every year from 2001.

Bonhams whisky specialist Martin Green said: “The Port Ellen distillery on Islay ceased production in 1983, and bottles from the programme of annual releases rarely come to auction. Being able to offer all 16 releases is very unusual, and I anticipate a great deal of interest from collectors.”

The auction will also feature a crystal bottle of Port Ellen 36-year-old 1981 bottled in 2017. Drawn from a single cask as part of Diageo’s Casks of Distinction programme, it is estimated at £4,500-£5,000.

Other rare Scotch whiskies to go under the hammer include Glenfarclas 60 Year Old, one of only 360 bottles the whisky comes in a crystal decanter and is estimated at £10,000-15,000.

Presented in a wooden box, The Macallan 1961 is one of 379 bottles and is estimated at £8,000-10,000.

Bottled in July 2011 under bond in Scotland or J & J Hunter in Belfast is Glenfiddich 47-year-old 1964. The whisky is bottle 005 of 24 and is estimated at £4,000-6,000.
