From Justin Timberlake to Susan Sarandon, some of the world’s most celebrated actors, musicians and footballers are among those to invest in their own bar – we round up the famous faces who have made their mark on the hospitality scene.

It’s no secret that celebrities like to party and some of Hollywood’s elite have taken nightlife to the next level by opening their own bars and clubs. Known for entertaining, it comes as no surprise that the stars are investing their hard-earned cash in a drinking den or two.

Making our list is former Man United footballer Gary Neville, who is set to open the doors of a famous tiki chain in Manchester, known to be popular with the likes of Prince Harry and One Direction.

Meanwhile, across the pond in New Orleans, Step Up star Channing Tatum unveiled a bar and restaurant dedicated to the city’s famous Storyville red-light district.

Gary Neville – Mahiki, Manchester

Last year, former Manchester United and England footballer Gary Neville announced his plans to open famous tiki nightclub Mahiki in Manchester. The new bar is set to open next month within the city’s business community, the Albert Estate. The Polynesian and tiki-themed chain also has ventures in Dubai and London, a favoured hotspot for celebrities including Prince Harry and One Direction. The new haunt is sure to become the best place to celeb-spot in the city.

Bill Murray – Murray Bros. Caddyshack, Florida

You might be surprised to hear that Hollywood veteran Bill Murray has not just one, but five brothers. Better yet, the six Murrays have opened a bar and restaurant dedicated to the famous sibling’s film Caddyshack, with plans for a second venue in Illinois currently in development. The Murrays – Bill, Andy, Ed, Brian, Joel and John – opened the first Murray Bros. Caddyshack bar and restaurant at the World Golf Village in Florida in 2001. The comedy star famously played green-keeper Carl Spackler in the 1980 film, written by his brother Brian Doyle-Murray. It was the six brothers’ experiences growing up as caddies at Indian Hill Club in Winnetka that inspired Doyle-Murray to write the script for the film.

 Jay-Z – 40/40, New York

American rapper Jay-Z first opened his first venue in New York in 2003, with venues in Atlantic City, Las Vegas and Brooklyn later opening. Known for their live music, celebrity patrons, and sports memorabilia, the hip-hop mogul opened the all-American sports bar and lounge with partner Juan Perez. Of his club, Jay-Z said: “I love sports and wanted to create an environment that is conducive to match my lifestyle, while watching the games at the same time.”

Channing Tatum – Saints and Sinners, New Orleans

Saints and Sinners is Tatum’s new restaurant-bar tribute to New Orleans’s famous Storyville red-light district on Bourbon Street. The Magic Mike star along with longtime friend and business partner Keith Kurtz opened the venue styled after the famous red-light district bordellos and burlesque halls of the Storyville era. The bar also provides a lengthy cocktail menu with sections dedicated to specialty drinks and dirty Martinis.

Susan Sarandon – SPiN

Part-owned by Hollywood icon Susan Sarandon, the chain of ping pong bars began with the opening of the New York venue in 2009. The bar and ping pong club has since expanded to Los Angeles, Toronto, San Francisco and Chicago. The ethos behind the popular chain is to “connect people regardless of age, gender or background” through sport. Equipped with a full bar and restaurant, VIP rooms and a pro-shop, it serves as a hub for social gatherings, tournaments, and events around the world.

Zack Braff – Mermaid Oyster Bar, New York

Situated in New York’s Greenwich Village, Mermaid Oyster Bar is the latest venture from Scrubs star Zack Braff. The bar boasts a nautical New England theme with a wide selection of oysters and a lengthy drinks list featuring cocktails such as the Mermaid Sangria, a combination of red wine, brandy, apple, grapes and citirus, and Don’t Mez With The Zarro, which blends jalapeno-infused Herradura, mezcal, lime and grapefruit. The bar and restaurant also boasts two other locations in the city, including the East Village and the Upper West. 

Piers Morgan – The Hansom Cab, London

The former Britain’s Got Talent presenter acquired the elegant Victorian pub, close to Kensington High Street, in 2010. Off the beaten path from Earls Court Road, the recently refurbished drinking den boasts comfy, relaxed surroundings with an open fire place. The purchase was made in collaboration with his brother Rupert Morgan and former general manager of Guy Ritchie’s The Punch Bowl in Mayfair, and Tarquin Gorst, also a partner of The Punch Bowl.

Nick Lachey – Lachey’s Bar, Ohio

The third sporting bar to make our list is Lachey’s, opened by American singer Nick Lachey and his brother Drew. Located at the corner of 12th and Walnut Streets in Cincinnati, Ohio, Lachey’s is a neighbourhood sports bar and grill boasting beer, wine, and even cocktails, on tap. There is also an array of bottled and canned beers, Bourbons and whiskeys, and signature cocktails, plus resident DJs spin every Friday and Saturday night from the broadcast booth.

Sir Ian McKellen – The Grapes, London

Actor Sir Ian McKellen owns The Grapes, a historic riverside pub in Limehouse, East London. Built in 1720, the pub was once frequented by Charles Dickens who mentions it in his novel Our Mutual Friend. The main bar leads into the Dickens Snug and features a small heated terrace that overlooks the Thames, while upstairs is an intimate candlelit dining room overlooking views of Canary Wharf and the City of London.

Justin Timberlake – Southern Hospitality BBQ, New York

Opening in 2007, Southern Hospitality is the creation of friends Justin Timberlake, Eytan Sugarman, and Trace Ayala. The food offering contains a selection of southern favourites including barbecue and pub fare, alongside an extensive Bourbon selection and an array of house cocktails made with Timberlake’s own Tequila brand 901.
