The Benevolent charity bike ride raises £13,000

A 100km bike ride organised by The Benevolent in memory of its late trustee, Dan Townsend, has raised £13,000 (US$16,800) for the drinks industry charity.

The charity bike ride raised more than £13,000 in memory of Dan Townsend

A total of 30 cyclists joined organisers Andrew Shaw, group wine buying director at Conviviality Plc, and Philip Tuck MW, wine director at Hatch Mansfield, for the 64.1-mile ride.

The riders started at the foot of the South Downs at Ridgeview Wine Estate in Sussex on Sunday (13 August) and ended in London, cycling via Leith Hill and Box Hill.

The cyclists were met by Townsend’s wife and daughter, Mel and Rose, in Twickenham, alongside other family members and friends.

Donations are still being accepted via the bike ride’s JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ridefordan.

David Cox, chief executive of The Benevolent, who announced plans to retire last week, said: “This was yet another example of how this wonderful trade comes together as a true community in order to help others.

“I would like to thank everyone involved but especially all the incredibly generous donors. You have made a real difference.”
