Parts of Texas have been ravaged by the storm; Houston in particular has been hit by severe flooding, people have been evacuated from their homes and a number of fatalities have been confirmed by various news sources.

In response to the disaster, drinks distributor Southern Glazer’s set up the employee relief fund to help its staff members in storm-impacted areas, and has promised to match the employee portion of donations up to US$100,000. Those wishing to make a donation can do so via the following link: https://www.gofundme.com/sgws-employee-relief-fund-harvey.

The company said it was also working on completing an employee assistance programme for those who are in need of immediate financial assistance, or other means of help as a result of Hurricane Harvey.

However, the firm also advised people to be cautious of scam artists attempting to benefit from the disaster via fake social media pages and phishing emails.

In a statement, Southern Glazer’s said: “Our number one focus is to determine and support the immediate needs of our employees and their families in Hurricane Harvey-impacted communities.

“We advise all employees in impacted areas, and in the path of the storm, to stay tuned into local news advisories regarding conditions in your immediate areas and follow safety instructions of local authorities and emergency centres.

“We will be sharing other opportunities for employees to support victims of Hurricane Harvey in the coming days. In the meantime, employees wishing to make a donation to a charity or disaster relief agency should go directly to the organisation’s web page – do not click on link in emails or texts from unfamiliar sources.”

The Southern Glazer’s employee hotline will be offering daily updates and information regarding the business’ operations in affected areas, and can be reached via 877 392 8383, then select ‘option four’.
