White Peak Distillery has received planning approval from the local councilThe result means preparations can get under way to transform the industrial units at Derwent Works in Ambergate into a distillery, complete with a visitor shop and tasting area.
The renovation will involve the conversion of two buildings at the site, including the installation of a grain storage silo.
White Peak Distillery, as it will be called, plans to produce English single malt whisky, and anticipates the creation of at least 11 new jobs over its first three years. The distillery will also produce its own gin while it waits for its whisky to mature.
Derby Enterprise Growth Fund agreed to provide grant-funding support to the distillery when the planning application was submitted in April this year.
