Macallan Six Pillars to lead Bonhams whisky sale

A complete set of The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars Collection will lead a Bonhams whisky auction in Hong Kong next month, when a number of rare Japanese whiskies will also go under the hammer.

The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars range

The Six Pillars range consists of six decanters made exclusively by French crystal house Lalique, which contain Macallan whisky aged – in order of release – for 50, 55, 57, 60, 62, and 65 years. The set is estimated to fetch HK$3,600,000-4,600,000 (US$461,000-589,000).

“Individual bottles from The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars Collection are among the most sought after and highest performing whiskies at auction,” said Daniel Lam, whisky specialist for Bonhams Hong Kong.

“This is a wonderful and rare opportunity for collectors to acquire such a desirable set in its entirety.”

According to valuation, consultancy and brokerage Rare Whisky 101, The Macallan remains one of the most popular Scotch whisky brands at auction.

The auction, taking place on 18 August at One Pacific Place in Hong Kong, will also feature a single Macallan Millennium Decanter (estimated at HK$210,000-250,000) and a vertical series of The Macallan – 40 bottles distilled between 1958 and 2006 (estimated at HK$600,000-800,000).

The Japanese whisky contingent will include an Ichiro Hanyu Ace-High Straight Flush (estimated at HK$150,000-190,000), as well as seven bottles from The Ghost Series (estimated at HK$270,000-350,000). Bottles in the series feature illustrations from 19th century Japanese woodblock printer, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.

A collection of whiskies bottled for the Conti Brothers grocery store in Sacramento will also feature, including 15 single malts personally selected by the brothers and bottled for them in the 1970s and ‘80s.
