London to host ‘UK’s largest’ mezcal tasting

The founders of the Dangerous Don and Quiquiriqui mezcal brands will launch the inaugural London Mezcal Week in September this year to celebrate Mexican culture, art, food and drink.

Taking place on Monday 11 September to Sunday 17 September, London Mezcal Week will encompass a series of events across the city, and end with a two-day mezcal tasting – said to be the largest ever held in the UK – as well as a Mexican Independence Day celebration.

Dangerous Don founder Thea Cumming and Quiquiriqu founder Melanie Symonds have teamed up with Lucie Massey – organiser of pop-up series Slap Ya Papa – to launch the festival.

A series of events will take place in venues across London, including exhibitions and panel discussions, Mexican mural and mezcal masterclasses, and food-pairings.

Mexico-inspired venues taking part in the festival include: Bad Sports, El Pastor, Santo Remedio, and Temper. There will also be a pop up mezcaleria running at the tasting event selling bespoke cocktails from some of London’s leading bartenders.

The tasting event will be held over two days in Hackney and will feature what is said to be the UK’s largest ever mezcal tasting, with 30 different brands.

“Independent brands will be given precedence at this festival, which will be focusing on traditionally made mezcals and the families behind them,” organisers said.

A proportion of the ticket sales will be donated to charities working with the agave industry. For more information on the event, see www.londonmezcalweek.com.
