Kayla Hasbrook wins Stoli LGBT+ bartender comp

New York City bartender Kayla Hasbrook has triumphed in the Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic, the world’s largest annual LGBT bartending competition.

Hailing from ABC Cocina in Manhattan, Hasbrook was competing against 17 regional finalists from across the US.

The final took place in Key West, Florida, and Hasbrook’s prize includes a US$12,000 donation to Planned Parenthood, and a charity local to the area.

The judging panel evaluated contestants on the authenticity, creativity and taste of their original Stoli cocktails. Judges included drag star Sushi, Harvey Milk foundation president Stuart Milk, American Idol‘s Latoya London and Breakthru Beverage Company’s programme development specialist, Nick Nistico.

Her winning cocktail No Sleep ‘til Sunrise comprises 1 ½ oz. Stoli Gluten Free, ½ oz. turmeric infused blanc vermouth, ½ oz. lime juice, ¾ oz. pineapple juice, ½ oz. simple syrup.

To create the serve, ingredients are shaken together and served on the rocks.

The Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic was first held four years ago and celebrates the role LGBT bartenders and bars have played in the move towards equality.

Each year the competition final is held at Key West Pride, organised in partnership with the Key West Business Guild, an organisation of LGBT-owned and LGBT-friendly businesses in Key West, Florida.
