Canada seeks human toes for cocktail garnish

The official tourism department for Yukon, Canada, has launched the ‘Make a Toenation’ campaign, encouraging hardy individuals to donate their digits for use in the territory’s staple Sourtoe Cocktail.

Tourism Yukon has launched the ‘Make a Toenation’ campaig

Earlier this month, the macabre cocktail’s main ingredient – a brown dehydrated toe – was stolen from The Downtown Hotel bar in Dawson City after being added to a drink, and was posted back with an apology four days later.

As such, Tourism Yukon is inviting individuals willing to part with their toes post-mortem to upload a picture of the digit to Instagram under the hashtag #MakeAToenation.

More than 70 images of toes have already been uploaded under the hashtag, with the owner of the chosen digit in line to win a holiday for two.

Established in 1973, the Sourtoe Cocktail has become a Dawson City tradition and is used to garnish a drink of the imbibers choice. There’s just one rule – drinkers must allow the toe to touch their lips in order to join the Sourtoe Cocktail Club.

Legend has it that the first toe used in the Sourtoe Cocktail came from rum-smuggler Louie Liken who suffered frost bite while travelling through the Arctic with his brother, Otto.
