Australian whisky distillery raises capital with Scotch bottlings

Australia’s Corowa Distilling Co. is to release a series of 10 “rare” single cask whiskies from the Ben Nevis distillery in Scotland it seeks to fund its own “grass-roots” whisky production.

Corowa Distilling Company is to release a series of ten rare single cask whiskies from Ben Nevis

With the help of Australian distributor Nip Of Courage, Corowa Distilling Company has sourced 10 casks from Ben Nevis aged between 16 and 18 years as an alternative to barrel investment schemes and white spirit releases.

The bottles will go towards funding the distillery’s own whisky venture while at the same time “offering something immediate to whisky lovers”.

Situated one hour inland from Albury, New South Wales, Corowa Distilling Company is the newest addition to the distributor’s portfolio.

“It’s very difficult for start-up Australian distilleries who have taken the plunge to focus on aged spirits,” said Kathleen Davies, owner, Nip of Courage. “Products like whisky, rum or brandy require, by Australian law, the distilled spirit to be aged by in a cask for a minimum of two years.

“This is why a lot of distilleries have recently taken on the production of white spirits that don’t require cask aging, and we’ve got some amazing gin, vodkas and moonshine in Australia at the moment. This way distilleries can look to generate an immediate revenue, but it inevitably takes time and recourses away from the production of aged spirits.”

Corowa Distilling Company founder Dean Druce added: “It’s a vision that I have had for a while but we just simply haven’t had the time to implement with the set up of our distillery and our busy production schedule, that is why we turned to Kathleen at Nip of Courage for her assistance.”

A set of 10 bottles will retail for approximately US$1,700.00 and can be purchased directly from The Oak Barrel in New South Wales or from Nip Of Courage.

To celebrate the initiative, a tasting event will be held at The Oak Barrel in Sydney and at Whisky & Alement in Melbourne, with dates and ticketing information yet to be announced.
