Mackmyra exports Sweden’s ‘first’ age-statement whisky
Swedish producer Mackmyra is to launch a 10-year-old expression – said to be Sweden’s first age-statement single malt whisky – in select export markets.
Mackmyra Ten Years is the producer’s first age statement with a wider public release
In total, there are 20,000 bottles, of which 12,000 were bought by government-owned Swedish alcohol retailer Systembolaget – the only retail store allowed to sell alcoholic beverages that contain more than 3.5% ABV.
The remaining volume will be sold in the company’s priority export markets – making the expression the distillery’s first age statement-bearing single malt to be released for general sale.
Ten Years has been matured in ex-Bourbon casks and new American oak casks that previously held oloroso Sherry. The whisky is created from the Mackmyra unpeated recipe and has been matured 50 metres underground at Mackmyra’s Bodås mine warehouse.
Ten Years has a natural golden-yellow colour with “spicy, floral and fruity” aromas with a “soft oakiness” and notes of “berries and dried fruit”. The whisky is medium-bodied and has a touch of “vanilla oak, raisin and anise”. The finish is long, and shows “berries, soft fruit and oak with a lightly vinous tone”.
The seasonal whisky will be available in much greater quantities than Moment Tolv, which Mackmyra launched in February this year.
“We are very proud to launch Ten Years. It is a special whisky which we have given a great deal of attention to and so it gives us extra pleasure to be able to share it with so many in the first really large public release of a Mackmyra whisky with an age statement,” said Magnus Dandanell, CEO of Mackmyra.
“It is very special to have blended our oldest whisky from four different types of cask. Demand has been great and it will be exciting to see how it will be received,” added Angela D’Orazio, master blender at Mackmyra.
Mackmyra Ten Years is available in Sweden and will also be available in select export markets.
