By Annie HayesThe Three Stills Company (TTSC) has been given the go-ahead to build a zero-waste facility on the site of its new distillery in the Scottish Borders.
An artist’s impression of the new Scottish Borders distilleryScottish Borders Council’s lead planning officer Julie Hayward has granted permission for the £3m plant to be constructed in Commercial Road in Hawick.
The site, a former sweet factory, will feature an anaerobic digester, incoming feeds and balance tank, a main equipment building housing a laboratory and an office and boiler room.
The site will convert the by-products generated from the distillery into biogas that can be used in the form of steam.
The officers’ report stated: “The proposal would result in the creation of jobs and would provide a renewable energy source for the adjacent distillery and visitor centre, benefitting the environment and local economy.”
Founded by former William Grant executives John Fordyce, Tim Carton, Tony Roberts and George Tait, the new distillery secured £10 million for the project in November 2016.
The distillery may soon become the first to open in the Scottish Borders in 180 years, though Mossburn Distillers and R&B Distillers are also planning distilleries in the region.
