Coconut rum with reduced sugar content launches

Newly formed drinks group Cloudbreak Spirits has launched a coconut-flavoured rum in the UK that is said have lower sugar content than competitor products.

Aluna Coconut is now available from Harvey Nichols

Aluna Coconut, bottled at 35% abv, is a blend of rums from Guatemala and the Caribbean with “all-natural” toasted coconut flavours.

It is also made with virgin sugar cane honey (miel de caña) in order to produce a “lighter and smoother rum” and “remove the need for the large quantities of sugar found in other coconut rums”.

Cloudbreak Spirits Director Heather Graham said: “We’re delighted to be launching Aluna Coconut at this time. Our brand world is built around a central theme of empowerment – particularly amongst women for whom this generation has conferred greater independence, liberty and self-determination.

“We’re confident this brand positioning, alongside the delicious flavour affinity of rum and coconut, coupled with a lower sugar content and clean, natural taste will appeal to our core target market of women and men aged 21+.”

Aluna Coconut launched on-shelf and online at Harvey Nichols last month and will be rolling out across the UK this summer. International distribution is planned for 2017/18.

Earlier this year, London-based tiki nightclub Mahiki has launched its own coconut rum liqueur, a blend of Jamaican and Polynesian rums with Western Samoan coconuts.
