Leeds bartender wins NRB 2017 cocktail comp
By Annie HayesTom Gedney-Higham of Bibi’s Italianissimo has been crowned the winner of the Northern Restaurant & Bar cocktail competition, sponsored by Whitley Neill Dry Gin – SB presents a showreel of the highlights.
Competitors were asked to submit a cocktail containing a minimum of 35ml of any Whitley Neill Dry Gin inspired by the gin’s South African influence.
On March 21, Gedney-Higham took to the back bar to battle against Bettina Kovacs, Dishoom, Edinburgh; Jenny Griffiths, Ten Mill Lane, Cardiff and Lükas Alberti, Three Six Six Battersea, London.
Gedney-Higham impressed the judges with his creation Terra De Fume – Smoke of the Earth – which combined Whitley Neill Dry Gin, Aperol, lemongrass and fresh lemon juice, Rooibos and orange syrup, and fresh pressed grapefruit.
Gedney-Higham’s prize includes a VIP trip to South Africa with Whitley Neill.
