Noveltea puts spin on afternoon tea

New UK brand Noveltea has introduced two new alcoholic tea expressions developed to put a twist on the quintessentially British afternoon tea.

Noveltea founders Vincent Efferoth and Lukas Passia developed the cold-brewed teas after being graduating from Newcastle University. The liquids are infused with either gin or rum and are said to be best enjoyed in the afternoon or to replace an evening gin and tonic.

The two variants are The Tale of Tangier, which is an infusion of Moroccan green mint tea with Caribbean rum, and The Tale of Earl Grey, which blends British gin and hand-selected botanicals.

Both expressions are cold-brewed for up to 12 hours to develop a “smooth taste”.

“This process draws out all the distinctive flavours without causing some of the bitter notes that can be associated with tea,” said Efferoth

“Cold-brewing also produces lower levels of caffeine by extracting more antioxidants than hot-brewed processes.”

Passia added: “We hope some of the fun behind the taste of each tale comes through when our drinks are enjoyed during afternoon tea in quirky places.”

Noveltea launched on 1 April with Fenwick Newcastle as the brand’s first retail partner. Both expressions are bottled at 11% abv and retail at £9.95 for 25cl and £24.95 for 70cl.
