DFWC to roll out alcohol retailing guidelines

The Duty Free World Council (DFWC) has committed to expanding its Code of Conduct for the Sale of Alcohol Products in Duty Free & Travel Retail across all regions.

The Duty Free World Council is widening its alcohol retail guidelines programme

The DFWC, a trade association representing the global interests of the duty free and travel retail industry, met at the IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas last month to discuss its developments.

At the meeting, the DFWC said it would roll out the guidelines, which focus on the responsible retailing of alcohol, and create a register of the companies which have signed up to the code.

In addition, the council said it would adopt the Responsible Retailing of Alcohol Products training programme (RRTP) developed by the Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association (APTRA).

Under the agreement, APTRA materials will be adapted for the requirements of the respective regions.

The RRTP is an online training service developed for retailers and suppliers in travel retail and duty free to ensure staff are educated on responsible alcohol retailing.

After undertaking the training, organisations become certified responsible retailers.

At the meeting, the DFWC also said it is preparing an economic impact study assessing the importance of travel retail and duty free in the Americas, and gave an update on the development of a Professional Development Programme for management within the industry.

Yesterday the chairman of a House of Lords Select Committee in the UK said they “cannot understand” why the government decided not to apply the Licensing Act 2003 to sales at airports.
