Smirnoff joins low-calorie trend with new RTD

Diageo has capitalised on the low-calorie drinks trend with the launch of a new zero-sugar Smirnoff vodka RTD – Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer.

Each can of Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer has 90 calories

The range of ready-to-drink 12oz cans have 90 calories – which Diageo claims is “fewer” than other leading hard seltzer brands – 1g carbohydrates, zero-sugar and no artificial sweeteners.

Described as a “great-tasting drink that eliminates resolution guilt”, Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer also has fewer calories than a 5oz serving of Champagne, according to Diageo.

The range is “infused with natural fruit flavours” and comes in three variants – Orange Mango, Cranberry Lime and Watermelon.

While made from grains, Digaeo claims the range has been “crafted to remove gluten”, but cannot be labeled as gluten-free.

“The Smirnoff brand is bringing something new to the emerging spiked seltzer category by now offering its lowest calorie option in its flavoured malt beverage portfolio,” said Krista Kiisk, brand director of flavoured malt beverages, Diageo Beer Co USA.

“We know people are looking for different options when it comes to their alcohol, and Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer delivers variety without sacrificing taste.”

Bottled at 4.5% abv, Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer is now exclusively available in the US at an RRP of US$8.99 for a six-pack of cans.

The launch is the latest in Diageo’s drive towards health and wellness-focused products. In February last year, the UK-based drinks firm unveiled Smirnoff Sourced, a flavoured vodka range that is made with real fruit juice, labelled gluten-free and devoid of high-fructose corn syrup.
