WhistlePig finishes rye whiskey in Scotch barrels

American whiskey brand WhistlePig has extended its Boss Hog series with the release of a 14-year-old rye whiskey finished in ex-Scotch barrels.

WhistlePig’s The Boss Hog: The Independent has been finished in Scotch whisky barrels

WhistlePig’s The Boss Hog: The Independent, a 100% rye whiskey, is the third edition in The Boss Hog range.

It has been finished in 250-litre Scotch hogsheads that have been refitted with American oak heads, making the whiskey one of the only ryes finished in Scotch barrels.

“Playing off the common practice of Scotch finishing their whisky in used Bourbon barrels, WhistlePig decided to return the favour,” the brand said. “With a backbone of delicious caramel, this year’s Boss Hog is fully rye on the front end, and fully Scotch on the finish.”

Only 30 barrels have been bottled as The Boss Hog: The Independent, which has an RRP of US$299.99.

In October last year, WhistlePig converted a 100-year-old bar in Vermont into a new single estate distillery – marking the first time the company has distilled its own product.
