Hottest bar openings in September 2016

A Jamaican-themed cocktail venture, a drinking den for steak lovers and an array of rooftop hangouts were among the most exciting bars to open their doors last month.

With summer coming to an end, September brings a swarm of new watering holes including the latest New York-style venue from the Dirty Bones team in East London, while in South London a creative space has opened for rum drinkers and lovers of Jamaican cuisine.

Across the pond in Williamsburg, a sky-high bar offering rare views of north Brooklyn is serving up an eclectic range of dishes and tasty cocktails.

Also continuing the rooftop bar trend is Skye bar situated above The Park Lane Hong Kong – offering mesmerising views and cocktails to match the distinctive characteristics of the bustling city.

Dirty Bones, Shoreditch

Known for its playful, New York-style cocktails, shots and shakes, London-based Dirty Bones has unveiled its third venue in an iconic Grade II listed building in the heart of Shoreditch. The new venue will host all-day dining for guests plus a lively bar area with DJ’s popping tunes every Friday and Saturday featuring old school funk, soul and hip hop.

Iron Fairies, Hong Kong

The latest addition to Hong Kong’s nightlife is The Iron Fairies, the brainchild of design extraordinaire Ashley Sutton – behind Ophelia and J Boroski. Originating from Bangkok, the bar brings something surreal with a hint of Middle Earth to a city already choc-full with watering holes. Illuminated by candles and iron chandeliers, the space comprises low-rise tables adorned with iron fairies and accommodates 80 guests. The menu is headed up by chef Todd Williams and the drinks list is heavy on the cocktails backed up with craft beers and Australian wines.

Street XO, London

Celebrated Madrid chef David Muñoz is set to open the London outpost of his Madrid restaurant, Street XO in Mayfair. Street XO is David Muñoz’s high octane and more accessible younger sibling to Diver XO, Madrid’s only three Michelin-starred restaurant. Just like the dishes at Street XO, David and his team take a similar gastronomic approach to the cocktail list, ensuring that all drinks are playful and unexpected and provide the right balance of sweet, salt, sour and bitter flavours to compliment dishes.

Buster Mantis, London

Located in south London is Buster Mantis, a destination that combines a Jamaican restaurant with a vibrant bar and a space for creatives, all contained in two beautiful converted railway arches. The cocktail list tends to revolve around rum, and specialises in local beers, on keg and in bottle, from small independents. Oh, and Red Stripe, obviously. 

Westlight, New York

Westlight, the rooftop bar atop Williamsburg’s new, William Vale hotel offers a rare sky high view of north Brooklyn. It’s also worth checking out the cocktail menu from head bartender Anne Robinson, previously of PDT and Brooker & Dax, with drinks like A New Kind of Kick – a tasty combination of Scotch, Fernet, Suze and orgeat. On top of that, dishes on offer include charred octopus skewers, duck carnitas tacos, and a burger with onion jam and mushrooms.

Bar 380, Blackpool

Following the launch of the famous Blackpool Illuminations this September, The Blackpool Tower Eye has launched a pop-up bar for visitors to enjoy the impressive light display from the best view in the house. Bar 380 offers some tranquillity in a stylish bar with a view of the illuminated streets below through the glass skywalk. 

Below the Cut, London

Head to steak restaurant Hanger SW6 for the arrival of a meat lovers drinking den serving cocktails alongside dishes and bar snacks championing the unsung hero of the meat world, the hanger steak. Below the Cut serves an extensive list of liquors, alongside their cocktail menu showcasing American-inspired classics such as the Hanger Old Fashioned as well as a few twists including the Pharmaceutical Stimulant made with Grey Goose, Patron XO Café, espresso and vanilla and the G&T Vesper, made with birchalls earl grey-infused Sipsmith gin, Skyy vodka, Martini Bianco, tonic and grapefruit created using the in-house balloon infuser. Home-infused gins will be a main feature of the regularly changing cocktail menu, with seasonal ingredients and unique flavour combinations.

Bluebird, Chelsea

Iconic Chelsea restaurant and bar, Bluebird returned last month after a beautiful refurbishment. Diners can take a seat at one of the many vibrant custom-made velvet and leather-backed chairs from Celia Birtwell. Ruby red bar stools adorn the centrally illuminated curved metal bar – perfect for casual sipping of the extensive cocktail list.

Skye, Hong Kong

Situated in The Park Lane Hong Kong, roof bar and restaurant Skye is set in the eclectic and vibrant location of Causeway Bay. Guests are invited to indulge in specially curated cocktails inspired by the varied and distinctive eclectic characteristics of Hong Kong. Signature cocktails include Rocking Horse, Global B-ART-tender, Tai Hong, and a range of special liquid nitrogen cocktails. Skye includes the main dining room, three private rooms and the temperature-controlled outdoor terrace with mesmerising views of Victoria Harbour and Victoria Park.

The Botanist, Sheffield

Well-known dining and drinking brand The Botanist has opened its tenth venue in Sheffield’s Leopold Square. Guests can delight in botanical cocktails, a vast selection of beers and ales and a handpicked selection of gins, local to each of The Botanist sites. Alongside its extensive drinks offering, guests can dine on food inspired by the deli, rotisserie and BBQ. The Botanist will also host live music with daily energetic evening gigs and lazy Sunday afternoon sessions with a real home-from-home atmosphere.
