Three Ships intros 10YO limited edition

South African-based brand Three Ships Whisky has launched the limited edition 10 Year Old Single Malt carrying a 2005 vintage age-statement.

Three Ships has launched a limited edition 10YO expression

The expression, described as “rich and complex”, is non-chill-filtered and presented at 44.6% abv. It follows the Collector’s Tin series of single malt expressions released over a three year period from 2010 to 2012.

Distilled in copper pot stills at the James Sedgwick Distillery in 2005, the release has been fully matured in American oak.

Master distiller Andy Watts described the 10YO limited edition as “the most powerful single malt” he has produced to date.

“When we launched South Africa’s first single malt in 2003 we didn’t have a single malt style policy in place,” Watts continued. “Since then we have actively planned towards this moment where we are now in the position to launch a vintage statement single malt, each year and one with a defined style and vision.”

Given nosing and tasting notes include pepper, spice, sweet oak, roasted malt, digestive biscuits, dark toffee and peat. The finish is “exceptionally smooth”, with a “long fruity, peaty aftertaste and slight hint of liquorice”.

Three Ships 10 Year Old Single Malt 2005 vintage will be available from select South African liquor outlets retailing at R524.95 (about US$40) per bottle.

The Distell-owned John Sedgwick Distillery appointed a new manager last month, with Jeff Green set to take over from Watts.
