Cocktails with ‘super-clean’ car fuel launch

Food and drink innovation company Bompas & Parr has teamed up with electric motor racing series Formula E to create a range of cocktails featuring “super-clean fuel that powers cars”.

The range of four cocktails are made with the non-toxic ingredient glycerine – the same product that charges generators for cars that race in Formula E. As a fuel, glycerine is almost emission-free and “so clean you can drink it”.

Ahead of Formula E’s Visa London ePrix in Battersea this weekend, Bompas & Parr has created the Formula E Cocktail, Mumm Champion Cocktail, Dunaliella Salina Gin Fizz and Electrified Pickleback cocktails.

Each drink is said to reference the “unique properties” of Formula E.

“For Formula E, we created a short range of cocktails that represented an interpretation of the taste of electricity,” said Harry Parr, of Bompas & Parr.

“By leveraging a number of unusual botanicals that create a tongue-tingling sensation on the palate with the essential – and happily food-safe – ingredients that form Formula E’s source of power, the result is an original collection of drinks that directly manifest Formula E as a brand.”

Formula E Cocktail is blue in colour to match the branding of the racing series and is served with a side of popping candy; Mumm Champion Cocktail contains the official Champagne sponsor of the series and a bay leaf;Dunaliella Salina Gin Fizz contains gin infused with sea algae, from which Formula E derives its glycerine; and Electrified Pickleback made with electrified pickle juice.

The Visa London ePrix takes place at Battersea Park on 2 and 3 July. Formula E was established by the governing body of world motorsport to demonstrate the ability of electric car technology in the field, embracing sustainable technologies.

Formula E Cocktail

Ingredients:

50ml ‘Electrified’ Absolut Citron Vodka

15ml Triple Sec

25ml lemon juice

10ml glycerine

20ml egg white

Mumm Champion Cocktail

Ingredients:

1 Bay Laurel leaf

20ml Bay Laurel-infused glycerine

120 ml MUMM Grand Cordon Champagne

Dunaliella Salina Gin Fizz

Ingredients:

50ml Dunaliella salina algae-infused Beefeater Gin

25ml lemon juice

20ml glycerine

20ml egg white

20ml soda water

Electrified Pickleback

Bompas & Parr’s instructions:

In one shot glass, pour 30ml Jameson Irish Whiskey. In a second shot glass, pour 30ml of electric pickle juice.

We electrify ours by passing electricity through gherkins so that they glow (it’s something to do with the way electricty reacts to salts in the gherkins and acid in the vinegar) and then muddling the pickles to extract the juice, but we don’t recommend you try this at home.

Instead, you can infuse a jar of pickles by adding a few Szechuan peppercorns and leaving overnight.
