Bath set to welcome first distillery in 250 years

A gin bar in Bath is set to open the city’s first distillery in more than 250 years after securing £750,000 funding.

The Bath Gin Micro-Distillery is set to open in August 2016

Bath Gin is the brainchild of Peter Meacock – founder of The Bath Gin Company and the Canary Gin Bar in Bath, which boasts a back bar of more than 200 gins.

It was first launched in 2014, and the recipe was developed with the help of mixologist Tim Wehelan and distilled by Thames Distillers in London.

Now, Meacock is readying to open his own micro-distillery in August, situated below the Canary Gin Bar and named Bath Gin Micro-Distillery and Botanicals Laboratory.

The distillery will have the ability to produce approximately 50,000 bottles each month when operating at full capacity.

Bath Gin Micro-Distillery and Botanicals Laboratory is also experimenting with creating its own tonic water using fever tree bark, which turns the tonic water a shade of pink.

Meacock said: “It’s the most joyous thing to see Bath Gin grow so quickly, it’s growing at about 40% a year.

“We sell about 60L of bottled Bath Gin a week and probably around 100L of loose gin a week.

“I have a great bunch of people around me and the brand is just flying; it’s so exciting.”

Furthermore, Bath Gin has recently had its bottle design tweaked to give the brand a more “modern” look.

Bath Gin is available to purchase at an RRP of £36.50 per 700ml bottle, £12.50 per 200ml bottle and £6.50 per 50ml.

The brand is already being exported to Scandanavia and Meacock is planning to expand its international footprint to France, the US and China.
