Sylvius Gin celebrates brand roots

The Netherlands-based Distillery Onder De Boompjes is today celebrating the birthday of Dr. Franciscus la Boë Sylvius, who inspired the group’s Sylvius Gin.

Dr. Franciscus la Boë Sylvius was born on 15 March 1614

Born on 15 March 1614, Dr. Sylvius was a merchant’s son who became a world famous doctor, and was, in particular, known for his experimentation with juniper distillates. Sylvius was one of the first people to register a distillate under the name ‘genievre’, or ‘genever’.

The doctor was conducting his research in Leiden, the same city where Onder de Boompjes Distillery was founded in 1658. Onder De Boompjes, the second oldest distillery in The Netherlands, therefore named its Sylvius Gin after the famous doctor.

“We use traditional genever ingredients like juniper, angelica, licorice and coriander seed,” said distillery owner Jean-Paul Batenburg. “By adding star-anise, cinnamon and lavender we created a very distinctive gin, which gives a taste of the Dutch nature.”

In total, Onder De Boompjes produces four types of genever, two gins and one vodka.
