Popcorn Sutton releases Barrel Finished spirit

Popcorn Sutton Distilling has launched its first brown spirit – a limited edition expression aged in charred oak barrels called Popcorn Sutton Barrel Finished.

Popcorn Sutton Barrel Finished has been launched to mark the anniversary of the Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton’s passing

The distillery’s namesake, bootlegger Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton, would sometimes barrel finish his moonshine to share at special events or give as gifts. Popcorn Sutton Barrel Finished is intended to honour the anniversary of his passing on March 16, 2009 with a nod to this tradition.

John Lunn, master distiller at Popcorn Sutton Distilling, said: “Today is a proud day for us, not just because we’ve created a unique, high quality barrel finished spirit which I believe people will truly enjoy, but because of what it means for carrying on the Popcorn Sutton legacy. It also marks our entry into the craft segment of an exciting and evolving brown spirits category.”

Finished for more than three years in new American oak casks, the expression is distilled by Popcorn Sutton Distilling and barrel finished in the hills of Cocke County, Tennessee, and is said to be “complex and smooth” on the palate.

Popcorn Sutton Barrel Finished won a Gold Medal at the Global American Whiskey Masters 2015 competition conducted by The Spirits Business.

“There’s a tremendous amount of momentum right now behind craft-distilled brown spirits among both men and women, and we happen to have one of the top master distillers in the industry,” said Megan Browning Kvamme, CEO of Popcorn Sutton Distilling.

“When you couple this with the re-emergence of the classic cocktail culture, specifically among millennials, and our ongoing commitment to Popcorn’s legacy, we’re confident in our decision to enter this segment.”

Popcorn Sutton Barrel Finished is bottled at 46% abv and will be available in Tennessee, North Carolina, Texas, Colorado and Ohio for an RRP of US$49.99.
