Glenfarclas releases 50YO expression
By Kristiane SherrySingle malt Scotch distillery Glenfarclas has released a 50-year-old expression, the third instalment in the limited edition Family Collector range.
The new Glenfarclas 50 Years Old release is the third in the Family Collector seriesEach release in the series represents a generation of the Grants of Glenfarclas. The 50YO expression represents third generation family member, George Grant (1874-1949), who inherited the distillery alongside his brother John. This led to the formation of J & G Grant, the private family company, which still owns the business today.
The Glenfarclas 50 Years Old has been matured in ex-oloroso Sherry casks, in-keeping with the distillery’s signature style.
On the nose, the whisky offers an “unexpectedly youthful” aroma of “fresh, sweet Sherry”. Given tasting notes include “assertive spiciness”, with treacle toffee, chocolate ice cream, and Sherry-soaked raisins.
The bottle is presented in a black leather box carrying the silver emblem of George Grant with III Roman numerals etched beneath.
George Grant, Glenfarclas sales director, said: “We’re very excited to have reached the half way mark in our Family Collector Series. Thanks to my family’s foresight in laying down stock for the future, today we’re able to enjoy impressive age statements which is certainly a luxury worth sharing!”
Bottled in late 2015 from casks dating back to the 1960s, the non-chill-filtered expression is available at 41.1% abv. 937 bottles have been produced, each retailing at around £1,850 (about US$2,550).
