New York distilleries release collaborative whiskey

Black Button Distilling and The O’Begley Distillery have joined forces to create Collaboration Whiskey, a new hand-crafted limited edition blend.

Founded in 2012 and housed in a 5,000-square-foot space, Black Button Distilling specialises in various “farm-to-still” products, while neighbouring O’Begley produces traditional Irish-style whiskey in its entirety, from grain milling to bottling, using a small-batch pot still process.

A selection of bottles were hand-selected by head distillers from the two Rochester, New York-based distilleries, before they were blended together, remarried in wooden ex-Bourbon casks and set to age together until the “ideal” flavour profile was reached.

“Black Button and O’Begley have grown up alongside each other in Rochester,” said Jason Barrett, Black Button Distilling owner and head distiller.

“What I love most about craft distilling is that we come together as a community to help each other. To put our collective skills together for this unique blend of whiskey has been a great learning experience and an opportunity to bring a unique bottling to the Rochester community,” he said.

With only 642 bottles of Collaboration Whiskey available, the limited edition expression is said to be “soft and subtle with notes of oak and malt, honey and brown sugar”.

“Prior to prohibition, Western New York had a long history of distilling, which has largely disappeared for the past 80 years. By working together, we are slowly restoring those traditions of local agriculture and quality craftsmanship that are the foundation of our community,” added Adam Begley of O’Begley Distillery.

Collaboration Whiskey is available for purchase at Black Button Distilling and The O’Begley Distillery, as well as various retail and liquor stores.
