Onder De Boompjes unveils ‘first’ gastro-gin

Spirits producer Onder De Boompjes has partnered with Dutch Michelin star chef Jonnie Boer to launch the “first” gastro-gin.

Onder De Boompjes and Michelin star chef Jonnie Boer have created a gastro gin, called Gin & Jonnie

The genever and gin producer spent a year working with Boer to create a gin using a combination of herbs, peppers and citrus that delivers the “best gastronomic value” – Gin & Jonnie.

“The classic gin and tonic has always been my favourite libation,” said Boer. “It’s got it all: pure, multi-layered, drinkable and refreshing.

“We all eat and drink every day, but what we really enjoy doing [in our restaurant] is turning this every day routine into a special experience, and sharing our love of great food and sophisticated drinks with our guests.

“I was born and bred in the Zwolle region, a picturesque rural area in the east of Holland.

“I spent my childhood catching pike perch, picking water mint, looking for boletus and chanterelle mushrooms and heading off for the duck enclosure with a punt.

“Growing up in an environment like this, how could I fail to fall in love with all of these fantastic regional products?”

The gin includes botanicals such as ruby grapefruit, amalfi lemon, verveine, Portuguese oranges, fennel seeds, fennel blossoms and five pepper varieties found all around the world.

Gin & Jonnie is said to have a fresh citrus taste with a hint of cardamom, balanced by the “subtle” peppers and a hint of anise to finish.

Onder De Boompjes distillery owner, Jean-Paul Batenburg, said: “So much passion for special, honest ingredients. We recognised our shared love of perfection, craftsmanship and authenticity – all of which you can taste in the final product.”
