Oblix inspired by America for new cocktails

Oblix, the sky-high London bar that sits on the 32nd floor of the Shard, has launched a new cocktail menu inspired by the history, geography, politics and fiction of the US.

Voodoo Vie is one of the cocktails that features on Oblix’s new Tasting America menu

The bar’s Tasting America menu aims to take visitors on a palatable tour of the US, referencing everything from New York’s city skyscrapers to spiritual folklore in New Orleans.

It also contains modern twists on some of the most famous mixes created in America, including the Cosmo, Margarita and Hurricane.

Kiss the Rainbow

Ingredients:

Ketel One Citroen Vodka, lime, grapefruit, Aperol, raspberry, peach bitters

Inspiration:

This colourful and playful cocktail is a re-imagination of 90s favourite, the Cosmopolitan. It is based on the bright skyscrapers of New York City and is an embodiment of the liveliness of the city.

Velvet Revolution

Ingredients:

Rémy Martin Cognac, becherovka, lemon, czech berry, violet, hops

Inspiration:

The term ‘Velvet Revolution’ was coined by the American press for an event that took place in the Czech Republic. At the time, change was on the horizon – the Soviet Union was weakening, communist states did not prosper and the people demanded change. This cocktail, its ingredients and presentation, reflects this moment in time and is inspired by a “yearning to be free”.

Voodoo Vie

Ingredients:

Zacapa 23 Year Old old rum, lime, caramel, banana, spices, walnut bitters

Inspiration:

Boasting one of the most interesting and unique vessels on the menu is Voodoo Vie, which is inspired by the emigration of people from the Caribbean to the US. This mixing of cultures meant that voodoo – an African-based spiritual folklore – became embedded in the deep American south, particularly New Orleans. The Voodoo Vie cocktail has been created in collaboration with Zacapa rum.

Last Night in ‘El Paso’

Ingredients:

Don Julio Blanco Tequila, lime, pistachio, agave, egg whites

Inspiration:

The inspiration for this serve comes from El Paso, Texas, the birth place of the classic Margarita cocktail. At the time, America had finally seen the end of the Great Depression, and now the industries were starting to boom. Last Night in ‘El Paso’ celebrates “an era in America, where anybody willing to grab opportunity, could make a name for themselves”.

More Buck More Bang!

Ingredients:

Reyka Vodka, lime, bitter berry, ginger beer, peach bitters

Inspiration:

This cocktail is a twist on the classic Moscow Mule, which rocketed in popularity in the US during wartime of the 1940s. More Buck More Bang! is served in vintage-style tin cups alongside bespoke coasters featuring the images of Oblix’s bartenders.

Crossfire Hurricane

Ingredients:

Havana Club rum, lime, apricot, exotic fruit, cardamom, honey essence

Inspiration:

The Crossfire Hurricane is another homage to New Orleans, which has played a vital role in the development of US cocktail culture. The city saw the creation of serves including the Sazerac, the Ramos Gin Fizz, and the Hurricane – the main inspiration for this fruity, exotic cocktail.
