DJ launches blended grain Scotch
DJ and songwriter TommyD is seeking to “revolutionise the whisky industry” with the launch of new blended grain Scotch, 808 Whisky.
DJ TommyD has launched a new blended grain Scotch brand, 808 Whisky
The brand is the result of a collaboration between the musician, real name Tommy Asher Danvers, and business partner Paul Pullinger. Noted whisky consultant Jonathan Driver helped produce the liquid, while renowned bartender Ryan Chetiyawardana has created a series of cocktails to accompany the Scotch.
Blended at Edinburgh’s North British distillery, 808 Whisky is described as “light, subtle and smooth”, suitable for serving neat and in cocktails.
Named after the renowned TR-808 drum machine, the no-age statement liquid has been “chill filtered for purity” and is bottled at 40% abv.
“8O8 whisky is unlike anything else in the market. The development of the liquid was the result of a fusion between a clear desire to make a beautiful, mixable and delicious whisky but one that resonated with the musical environment in which it would be found,” said Driver.
“We weren’t just making a sensational whisky, we were creating an entirely new conversation with a new generation of whisky drinkers.”
Danvers says he has brought together his two passions with the launch: whisky and dance music. He is best known for his work with artists such as Right Said Fred, Catatonia, KT Tunstall, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Graffiti6. In addition, his career as a songwriter and/or producer has led him to work with a number of artists, including Kylie Minogue, Janet Jackson, Noel Gallagher, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Kanye West, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Adele, and Emeli Sandé.
808 Whisky was initially soft launched in late 2015 as the house pour in clubs including Fabric, Ministry of Sound and The Warehouse Project. The product is now set to be release to the consumer market from March 2016 with an RRP of £32 for 70cl.
Last week, Canadian rapper Drake hinted on Instagram that he too was preparing to launch a spirits brand, expected to be called Virginia Black Whiskey.
