Campo de Encanto expands pisco portfolio
Peruvian pisco producer Campo de Encanto is to introduce Barkeep’s Whimsy, a new expression created by a group of competition-winning bartenders.
Campo de Encanto is launching Barkeep’s Whimsy, an original pisco blend
Encanto’s Distiller’s Apprentice competition, held since 2011, sees groups of bartenders from around the world travel to Peru to visit the company. During the programme, they are tasked with creating their own pisco blend. Barkeep’s Whimsy is the result of these sessions.
The pisco is produced using a solera blending style and the same five grape types as the brand’s Grand & Noble recipe: Torontel, Quebranta, Moscatel, Mollar and Italia. Barkeep’s Whimsy differs in that the blend leads with the Torontel grape, an aromatic varietal known as Torontés in Argentina.
According to the brand, Barkeep’s Whimsy offers is “light, bright and very aromatic”, with given tasting notes of citrus, spice, and the “elongated viscous finish, Encanto is known for”.
“Time and time again throughout the years of our Distiller’s Apprentice programme, we saw our bartenders gravitating toward the bold aromatics of the Torontel grape,” said Duggan McDonnell, Campo de Encanto co-founder and master blender.
“Through tastings and their own custom blends, they wanted Torontel – which makes a beautiful, complex base for cocktails. With our next pisco expression, we wanted to create something for our bartenders – a cocktail-driven, aromatic, Torontel-dominant style, so very different from any pisco available. A ‘bartender’s choice’, if you will.“
Barkeep’s Whimsy is bottled at 40.5% avb and carries a SRP of $49.99 for a 750ml bottle. The product is currently available in California with an expected roll-out into additional markets in the US and abroad from March 2016.
Campo de Encanto was founded in 2010 by Duggan McDonnell, Walter Moore and Carlos Romero, who have 60 years industry experience between them. The company’s piscos are distilled once from sustainably harvested grapes with no added preservatives, sugars or water.
