ELLC introduces barrel-aged gin series

East London Liquor Company (ELLC) has launched the Barrel-Aged Gin Programme, a “pioneering” range comprising four “experimental” bottlings which will be rolled out throughout 2016.

ELLC has launched the first expression of its new series of barrel-aged gins

A popular process in the 18th and 19th centuries; ELLC is seeking to reinstate the practice of barrel-aging white spirits with a new line of gin expressions.

The distillery will roll out more than four experimental bottlings throughout the year, each with handwritten labels.

The inaugural offering, East London Liquor Company Barrel-Aged Gin, sees the distillery’s signature London Dry Gin aged in French Oak barrels.

The casks will impart vanilla and dried fruit notes commonly found in Bourbon, while “complementing and enhancing” the gin’s botanicals, which comprise lemon and grapefruit peel, coriander, angelica root, juniper berries, cubeb berries and cardamom.

Oak was traditionally used in the transportation of spirits when other containers were thought to be too expensive. As the gin aged over the course of it’s journey, the spirit picked up the sweet, spiced vanilla qualities of the oak casks.

East London Liquor Company founder, Alex Wolpert said: “In the 18 months since we opened, we have worked continuously to produce honestly-priced, innovative spirits for the UK, and the Barrel-Aged Gin Programme is no different. We are excited to launch this experimental range and look forward to releasing the results. ”

East London Liquor Company Barrel-Aged Gin is bottled at 55% abv.

At the end of last year, ELLC launched Creator’s Cask 2015, where fans were given the chance to own one of the first whisky casks to be produced in London for more than 100 years.
