Plans unveiled for Devon’s first whisky distillery

Plans to build the first whisky distillery in Devon have been unveiled, which, if approved, will see the transformation of a 150-year-old town hall.

Bovey Tracey’s town hall could be transformed into Devon’s first whisky distillery

As reported by Exeter Express & Echo, the Dartmoor Distillery is to be based in the town hall of Bovey Tracey and plans to produce a single malt whisky.

Built in 1866, the Grade II listed town hall currently houses Bovey Tracey Town Council, which will move to a new building.

The council has already agreed to lease the town hall to Dartmoor Distillery directors Simon Crow and Greg Millar, who also plan to transform the site into a wine bar, bistro and visitors’ centre.

Teignbridge District Council – the area’s planning authority – will make a decision on the application next month.

A number of distilleries have been built in Devon, but none currently make whisky. In 2014, the Devon Distillery launched the first British-made version of grappa, called Dappa.
