Jersey ‘considering’ alcohol display ban

The government of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, has said it is not ruling out introducing alcohol display bans for shops.

Screening off alcohol in a similar way to tobacco may be considered in the future, according to an ITV report.

Ian Gorst, the chief minister of Jersey, wrote in response to deputy Montfort Tadier: “Further consideration may be given to point of sale restrictions (for example, screening), but the benefits would need to be fully assessed in light of on-going media advertising.”

He added that there are no plans to ban alcohol advertising, as it would be difficult to control UK print and broadcast media.

According to the Safeguarding Adults Partnership Board, Jersey has “one of the worst drinking problems in Europe”, with one in 25 islanders dependent on alcohol.

in its draft 2016 Budget, the Jersey government says it will increase alcohol duties following consultation with a number of groups, including Health and Social Services. The proposals would see duty on spirits increase by 6.6%, compared to a 1.3% increase for wine, 4.9% for strong beers and ciders, and 2.8% for standard beers and ciders.
