Police seize fake alcohol worth £30,000 at Notting Hill Carnival

Counterfeit alcohol worth more than £30,000 was seized at London’s Notting Hill Carnival yesterday morning.

The matter has been referred to Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Trading Standards

The haul included more than 260 bottles of assorted spirits and Champagne, and over 50 cases of beer and cider.

Six large containers of rum punch were also uncovered.

Further examination has revealed the spirits are both counterfeit and over-proof.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “The alcohol, which is estimated to have a street value in excess of £30,000, has been examined and is believed to be counterfeit and over-proof.

“The matter has been referred to Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Trading Standards.”

The Notting Hill Carnival was first held in 1966 and is now an annual event that takes place on the streets of Notting Hill, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea over three days each August.

Last month an illicit alcohol factory was found to be harbouring more than 130,000 litres of “potentially toxic” bootleg vodka worth £1.7 million.
