New €20m Irish whiskey distillery to open in 2016

A new €20 million distillery and visitors’ centre in Drogheda, Ireland – the first in nearly 50 years – is forecast to create 80 new jobs when it opens next year.

Plans have been revealed for a €20m investment in a new distillery in Drogheda, Ireland

With 50,000sqft capacity, the Boann Distillery will feature an Irish whiskey distillery, Boyne Brewhouse craft brewery and a taproom.

Chief executive Pat Cooney, previously of the Gleeson Group, will spearhead the family-owned business, which is supported by Enterprise Ireland.

“Today’s announcement of 80 new jobs in Drogheda is a great boost for the town and the wider North East region,” said Richard Bruton, minister for jobs, enterprise and innovation.

“Investments by Irish businesses have a massive knock-on impact on the local economy, through construction, supply and service businesses.

“Boann Distillery is a great example of the type of company we are trying to support – an Irish company, operating at the cutting edge of its sector, focussed on selling its goods around the world, and creating jobs in a regional town.”

Julie Sinnamon, CEO of Enterprise Ireland, commented the agency has worked in close proximity to the Boann Distillery to develop its expansion and investment plans.

She said: “This is an ambitious and highly innovative company, with great potential to scale and grow rapidly in international markets from its base in Drogheda.”
