Hottest bar openings in August 2015

Europe’s first hotel dedicated to all things Tequila, a bar “chamber” and the latest venue by the Talented Mr. Fox got barflies buzzing last month.

A number of hot new bars made their debuts last month

Matt Whiley, creator of London’s cutting edge cocktail bar The Talented Mr. Fox and Peg + Patriot, moved to Mayfair for his new venture, while the Isle of White was revealed as the somewhat unusual location for a new Mexican haven.

JJ Goodman, co-founder of London Cocktail Club, jumped on the apothecary cocktail theme and debuted a new location for his famous franchise.

El Patron, Isle of White

Opened by the due behind London’s El Patron restaurant and bar on the Isle of White, this Tequila-themed hotel is thought to be the first of its kind in Europe. El Patron Isle of White occupies a the Grade II listed Charter House in St. Thomas Square and offers “an authentic South American experience”. While the restaurant serves Mexican street food-style dishes, each room in the six-bed boutique hotel is themed around a different drink from El Patron’s Tequila menu and has its own signature cocktail serve.

Side Bar Nola, New Orleans

Side Bar Nola is a new whiskey and cocktail joint based in the legal district of New Orleans and is uniquely styled as a judge’s chamber. Interesting cocktails include the Thomas Holley, made with rye, dry curacao, grapefruit and sage syrup. Also a stone’s throw away from the LSU Medical Complex and law enforcement headquarters, Side Bar is set to become one of the favourite watering holes among New Orleans’ high flyers.

The Green Room at Multnomah Whisk(e)y Library, Portland

Said to hold an “exhaustive collection representing all major, and lesser, styles of distilled spirits known to the modern world”, the Multinomah Whisk(e)y Library first opened in 2013. However, its owners have now opened a second bar at the venue, called The Green Room, to help accommodate its legions of visitors and decrease cocktail waiting time. Focusing on aperitifs, The Green Room also serves Sherry, Champagne and light snacks.

The Murray Hill Club, Washington DC

The Murray Hill Club is named after one the most famous Bourbons created by pre-Prohibition distiller Joseph Magnus and is run by DC’s bartender of the year in 2014, Nicole Hassoun. Offering craft gin and Bourbon cocktails, the bar has been opened by Magnus’s great-grandson Jimmy Turner, who is also launching the Jos A. Magnus & Co Distillery later this month.

Showdown, London

The latest project by the Talented Mr. Fox himself, Matt Whiley, Showdown is an all-American cocktail bar based beneath Marylebone restaurant The Lockhart. Whiley and his team have created a bespoke list of cocktails for Showdown focusing on rye whiskey and Bourbon. The Pick it Lick it cocktail is comprised of rye whiskey, pickled watermelon and house pecan soda; while the Beignet cocktail is a mix of house doughnut vodka, fennel sugar and egg.

Levelthirty Lounge & Bar, Hong Kong

Located on the top floor of Marriott Hong Kong Sha Tin, Levelthirty is described as a “relaxed and modern “ setting offering signature cocktails and tapas with panoramic views of the Tolo Harbour, racecourse and neighboring mountain landscape.

London Cocktail Club Islington, London

The latest incarnation of the phenomenally popular London Cocktail Club has taken root in Islington. The bar is described as a “naughty cocktail pharmacy” signposted by an “Apothecary Off Licence” shop front and “Staff Only” door. Out the back is an “A&E” (Alcohol & Entertainment) second bar. Form an orderly queue.
