1897 Quinine Gin launches in UK
By Kristiane SherryMaverick Drinks has introduced 1897 Quinine Gin on World Mosquito Day, with over half of the gin’s profit to be donated to Malaria No More UK.
1897 Quinine Gin is a malaria-fighting gin made with cinchona bark. The London dry gin is made with cinchona bark, a traditional source of quinine which has been used as an antimalarial for centuries. It is vacuum-distilled, as are fellow botanicals pink and white grapefruit and lemon peels, for a “complex, citrusy lift”.
1897 Quinine Gin includes 10 other copper pot-distilled botanicals: juniper, coriander, angelica, orange, lemon, nutmeg, cassia, cinnamon, orris and liquorice.
According to the brand, the gin “honours the ground-breaking work of Nobel laureate Sir Ronald Ross”, the scientist who discovered malaria parasites in mosquitos.
His breakthrough on 20 August 1987 is marked every year with the World Mosquito Day initiative.
At least £5 on every 1897 Quinine Gin bottle sold will be donated to charity Malaria No More UK, enough to buy, deliver and hang a mosquito net for a family living at risk from malaria.
1897 Quinine Gin is bottled at 45.8% available from Master of Malt an Amazon now with an RRP £39.95 for 70cl.
Earlier this year Maverick Drinks launched a magnum-sized bottle of its Professor Cornelius Ampleforth’s Bathtub Gin.
