Whisky bottler moves into barrel-aged gin
Independent whisky bottler the Gleann Mor Spirits Company has moved into gin with the launch of an expression aged in American oak casks.
Firkin Gin has been aged in American oak casks for three months
Firkin Gin has been aged for three months in casks that have previously held whisky and is produced in very small batches of no more than 250 bottles.
Each batch of Firkin Gin will be unique and aged in different types of American oak casks, with Batch One aged in a former Heaven Hill Bourbon barrel.
Batch Two will be matured in Glen Garioch casks and Batch Three in Allt-á-Bhainne casks.
Gleann Mor also plans to launch a limited edition variant of Firkin Gin aged for three months in the Glen Garioch cask and further finished for three weeks in a Lagavulin cask.
The gin’s botanicals include juniper, coriander seed, Angelica root and orris root.
“We’ve created something very special here, said Derek Mair, founder of the Gleann Mor Spirits Company. “We’re setting the standard for aged gin, and couldn’t be more excited to be doing so.
“Whisky and Gin are two of our favourite things, so, naturally, we’ve been eager to experiment with the two. Our juicy American oak casks produce a truly unique flavour and a beautiful golden hue.”
Alwynne Gwilt, otherwise known as Miss Whisky, has taken on a brand ambassador role with the Gleann Mor Spirits Company.
“I’ve been a whisky lover for years, but every once in a while I like a sneaky gin and tonic too. So when I heard about Firkin gin, aged in my favourite type of cask – American oak – I was eager to learn more,” said Gwilt
“I was very impressed from the start with both Firkin’s flavour profile as a mixed drink, and the fact I could also comfortably sip it neat.
“It’s been a fantastic opportunity to get involved with this small brand that I know will be making big waves for both whisky and gin lovers in the months and years to come.”
The aged gin category has been gaining pace in recent months, as this list of the top 10 barrel-aged gins shows.
Bottled at 46% abv, Firkin Gin is available directly from Gleann Mor Spirits Company and select independent retailers at an RRP of £45.
