Diageo appoints new Australia MD

Diageo has appointed David Smith managing director of Diageo Australia, effective 1 September, as Tim Salt leaves the company.

David Smith is the new managing director of Diageo Australia

Smith will be responsible for all aspects of Diageo’s Australia and New Zealand business, including manufacture, marketing and sales. He will report to Sam Fischer, president, Diageo Greater China and Asia.

He succeeds Tim Salt, who has held the role since 2008.

Smith joins the Australian business from Diageo Ireland, where he has led the business as country director for the past four years.

He first worked for the company – then Guinness – in 1990 as part of a graduate trainee scheme. He has since held a number of senior marketing and commercial roles in the business.

“During David’s time at the helm, Diageo has strengthened its position as Ireland’s leading drinks company, increasing share through a combination of innovation, increased distribution and improved return on marketing investment,” a Diageo spokesperson told The Spirits Business.  “David’s successor will be the subject of a future announcement.’’
